Case Study: The Roof Top Gallery
Don’t dismiss the edit
Some might think shooting a property is where it starts and stops. However, that’s far from the case - especially with interiors. As a rule of thumb, the edit usually takes twice as long as the shoot. Editing can take an average-looking property into the realms of very nice. We never push the edit too far; instead, we focus on subtle retouching—enhancing light and warmth, highlighting areas of beauty and gently masking flaws.
Stage 1 – Capture one
Capture One is our first port of call. We upload all images into the programme and apply our secret sauce - our preset - with pre-programmed adjustments and levels. This gives us a solid base and consistency across all images, while aligning with our client’s vision.
Once the style is applied, we move on to lens adjustments and keystoning. After everything is straightened, we begin working through the images, manually adjusting levels and colour balancing to lift the image. Finally, we organise the images in chronological order before exporting them for the next step.STAGE 2 – Photoshop Retouch
Moving into photoshop, we work through the images. This is a very methodical process. First removing any superficial marks on the walls and furniture, nothing too big, as we wouldn't want to create a lie within the image. Think of it like a cleanup job. We then go onto removing some of the bigger items like plug sockets/switches and wires. Wires are our enemy, they're everywhere and spoil the image - they always go. We then may make any further adjustments to the colour balance, pulling blues/yellows down individually to create a more neutral image. We then finish up with some other adjustments but trade secrets and all have to keep them hush-hush. Whats the point?
These processes may seem excessive, but they make all the difference. Imagine you are the owner - you have invested so much time and money into getting this project across the line. Shooting it on a phone is a disservice not only to you, but also to what you have created and the effort you have put in.Capturing it properly is the icing on the cake - the final step. Finish on a high and do it properly: job’s a good'n.
